The inaugural Asia-Pacific Amateur Golf Team Championship was held in the Philippines in 1963. The event’s purpose was to develop the sport of golf in the Asia-Pacific region as well as to enhance mutual friendship among APGC member associations. Due to a limited budget at the initial stage, we were very much indebted to Mr. Shun Nomura, the then Vice President of Japan Golf Association for his generous trophy contribution to the Championship. In honor of Mr. Nomura, the event has been named the Nomura Cup from then on.
The Nomura Cup is held biennially. There are 19 teams taking part in this year’s event, a history high. The Japan team has won 8 championships, followed by Australia team with 7 championships and Chinese Taipei team with 5 championships. The defending champion from Australia has held the championship four times in succession since 1999.
