The 23rd Asia-Pacific Teams Championship, known as the Nomura Cup after Shun Nomura, the former Vice-President of the Japan Golf Association who donated the Cup, will be played at Sunrise Golf and Country Club, Taiwan, from the 2nd- 5th October 2007.

This is the third occasion that the Nomura Cup will be played in Taiwan with the past two championships held at Taiwan Golf Club in 1967 and 1989. In 1967, Chinese Taipei recorded one of its 5 victories in the Cup with a 45 shot margin, still the largest winning margin in the Cup’s history, while in 1987 the Japanese Team, which included Tour star Shigeki Maruyama, recorded one of its 8 victories.

Sunrise Golf and Country Club was not available as the venue for past Cup’s in Taiwan as it only opened in 1992. In this short time, however, Sunrise has gained a reputation as the best course in the country and offers a championship golf resort with world-class facilities.

Sunrise was designed by one of the world’s famous golf course architects, Robert Trent Jones Jr, and is one of two courses he has designed in the country. The championship18-hole course measures over 7,091 yards and is a challenging mountaintop course with many elevated holes offering spectacular views. There are numerous water hazards, bunkers and tight fairways with the signature 10th hole temping long hitters to cut a dogleg around a water hazard to get as close as possible to the green.

In August 2002, Sunrise has completely replaced its greens with Champion Dwarf Bermuda grass which has resulted in the greens being rated as the fastest in Asia. In just under 15 years, Sunrise hosted a number of major professional and amateur tournaments including 9 Taiwan Opens and the major Taiwanese amateur tournament the Acer International, which is one of the counting events for the R&A’s World Amateur Rankings. Sunrise is therefore more than able and ready to host the Nomura Cup Asia-Pacific Golf Confederation Championships in 2007

In addition to the golf course, visitors to Sunrise for the first time are in for a treat and a very special experience. This starts when you first enter the clubhouse and encounter a massive foyer with a fifty foot high vaulted ceiling supported by huge marble columns.

Also in this area is the Taiwanese National Golf Museum which provides an excellent visual and historical account about the development of golf in the country. You could have to go a long way to find a club or facility that offers more than Sunrise and part of the thrill in being at Sunrise is exploring all it has to offer. Sunrise is much more than a golf club and offers a full suit of activities that more resemble an entertainment theme park than a golf club.

These include:
• 83 luxurious 5-star suites and conference facilities
• 4 restaurants and function facilities including Chinese, Japanese and western cuisine
• Indoor and outdoor swimming pools
• A recreation centre featuring a spa and steam bath
• Hair salon
• Karaoke/KTV rooms
• Indoor movie theater
• Health club with aerobics room
• 18-holes mini golf course
• Indoor 8-lane bowling rink and skating rink
• Children’s play room with numerous electronic and pin ball machines
• Table tennis, squash and billiard rooms
• Shooting range, disco hall and bridge room It is hard to fathom the size and scale of the facilities that Sunrise offers but for those who want more the course is located less than an hour from the CBD of Taipei and only 20 minutes from the airport. No trip to Taiwan would be complete without a visit to the capitol and a trip up the world’s tallest building, Taipei 101. Sunrise Golf and Country Club is shaping up to be an outstanding venue for the 2007 Nomura Cup. The golf course will provide a worthy test in determining the regions leading amateur nation and should result in some spectacular golf. But golf is only part of the whole experience that the teams, officials and spectators will encounter at Sunrise and they can look forward to a most memorable visit.
